Detroit June 2, 2008 - The City of Detroit borke ground on the new "Piquette Square" complex that will provide 150 apartments for homeless veterans in Detroit. The complex is being built on the site of the E-M-F/Studebaker plant that was destroyed by fire in 2005. Full Story.

Chicago May 9, 2008 - Federal officials filed new charges against former Avanti owner Michael Kelly in a $500 million fraud scheme. Investigators say he sold bogus time shares. They say Kelly swindled thousands of investors across the country, including some from his South Bend office. He was originally arrested in 2006 on 10 counts of mail fraud. Read more.

Carlisle, PA April 25, 2008 - Ever wanted to own a classic car but couldn’t afford one? Later this fall, 50 million Detroit classics will roll out of the nation’s 37,000 Post Office show rooms as the second issuance in the America on the Move commemorative stamps series.  The 50s Fins and Chrome 42-cent First-Class stamps go on sale Oct. 3, and feature paintings by renowned automobile illustrator Art. M. Fitzpatrick—a ’57 Chrysler 300C, ’57 Lincoln Premiere, ’57 Pontiac Safari, ’57 Studebaker Golden Hawk and a ’59 Cadillac Eldorado. The stamps were modeled after cars still on the road today. Jericho, NY April 9, 2008 - State Bancorp, Inc. (Nasdaq:STBC), parent company of State Bank of Long Island ("State Bank"), announced today that an agreement has been signed with Main Street Bank of Kingwood, Texas, for the sale of substantially all of the assets of State Bank's leasing subsidiary, Studebaker-Worthington Leasing Corp. Roscoe, IL March 7, 2008 - The 1932 Studebaker Commander John Dillinger used as a getaway car when his gang robbed the Central National Bank in Greencastle, Indiana will be featured in the movie “Public Enemies.” Click here for story.

Poughkeepsie, NY February 22, 2008 - Gary J. Lindstrom, an engineering graduate in Dutchess Community College’s first class of 1960, began an endowed scholarship with the DCC Foundation to be awarded annually to a DCC Engineering Science student. Applicants must write an essay of one single-spaced page related to Studebaker motorized vehicles. Read more.

South Bend February 19, 2008 - The Studebaker National Museum is celebrating Black History Month with a new exhibit. "In Their Own Words" chronicles the careers of Studebaker's black employees. The exhibit combines interviews the museum conducted with articles published in the South Bend Tribune. Full story.

South Bend February 2, 2008 - The Studebaker National Museum is planning a new exhibit, "What Might Have Been: Prototype and experimental Studebakers." The exhibit will be on display from May 10, 2008 through September 15, 2008 and will feature a number of Studebaker's most interesting designs and concepts from the 1950's and 1960's, including the Sceptre, the Pacakrd Predictor, a four-door Avanti and a rear-engine Lark. Jericho, NY January 30, 2008 - The last surviving remant of Studebaker Corporation is for sale.  State Bancorp, Inc. announced it is involved in duscussions to sell its Studebaker-Wortington Leasing Corp subsidiary. Read more.

Detroit December 18, 2007 - The Michigan Economic Development Corporation announced it will support eight community redevelopment projects in Detroit and Dearborn, including the site of the E-M-F/Studebaker Plant #1 on Piquette Street. Click here for full story.

South Bend October 30, 2007 - Another Studebaker structure is going down in South Bend history. On Tuesday, demolition contractors walked through the old South Bend lathe site. They will soon submit bids to tear down the building. Read more.

Cookeville, OH October 27, 2007 - Studebaker descendant George Reitenour shares some of his collection and knowledge of Studebaker watches and automobiles recently with members of Friends of the Cookeville Depot during the group's annual meeting. Full story.

Osceola, WI October 20, 2007 - Motorbooks is offering a new book, “Virgil Exner Visioneer,” by Peter Grist ( Veloce Publishing, 2007) on the life and career of Virgil Exner who, as a member of Ramond Loewy's design firm, was responsible for some of Studebaker's most innovative designs. Monroe, WA October 16, 2007 - In 10 days, Monroe's Roger Habich and his father, Daryl, will jump in a souped-up '53 Studebaker and race an international field of drivers 2,000 miles across Mexico at speeds of up to 200 miles per hour. Click here for full story.

Oxnard, CA October 11, 2007 - Auto racing legend and former Studebaker executive Andy Granatelli will be speaking at "Race Day" at the Murphy Auto Museum in Oxnard on Saturday, October 13. According to the Motor Sports Hall of Fame Web site, he is "a racer, a car owner, designer, businessman, promotional genius, an automotive expert." Among his accomplishments, he has been responsible for setting more than 400 world land speed records (29 of them driving a 1963 Avanti R3 at Bonneville in 1962), designed engines for Chrysler, Cadillac and Studebaker, designed and raced the famous Indianapolis turbine engine car and turned a small company that he renamed as "STP" into a household name. Detroit October 7, 2007 - The former Packard Motor Car Company factory & corporate office is for sale. 3.5 million square feet of automotive history is on the market for $13 million. Idled in 1956, just two years after the merger with Studebaker, the facility is in serious disrepair; nevertheless it is a one of a kind piece of real estate. South Bend September 29, 2007 - The Studebaker National Museum presents "She's Real Fine: Muscle Cars" through March 16, 2008. Muscle Cars are American built high performance automobiles with origins tracing back to the mid-1950s. They created such an impact on the automotive world that their influence can still be seen in the showroom today. Studebaker National Museum's latest exhibition, "She's Real Fine: Muscle Cars," looks at the cars, personalities, and culture that make up this exciting slice of  automotive engineering history. New York April 18, 2007 - Columbia University in collaboration with the New York State Historic Preservation Office and a historic consultant is renovating the Studebaker building on West 131st Street in New York City. Constructed by Studebaker in 1923, the building was used as an assembly plant/ finishing facility until 1930. Since then the building has had a number of tenants, including Borden, who used it as a milk processing plant, and the Madame Alexander Doll Company. Columbia University staff members have been working in the building for about 20 years. The Studebaker logo is still on the building, and Columbia's restoration will respect "the exterior and interior historic fabric of the building." For more information on the project click here.
